Building & Landscaping Services in Bedford & Bedfordshire: The Arcadia Guide

    11 May 20268 min read

Some of the most rewarding projects we've completed as a business have been in Bedfordshire. Not straightforward jobs - proper, complex transformations that required every skill we have across building, extensions and landscaping, all delivered under one roof.

Here are two that illustrate what we do better than any service list could.

Turvey, Bedfordshire - Stone Cottage Full Refurbishment, Extension & Landscaping

The Turvey project was one of those jobs you don't forget. A beautiful stone cottage with thick original walls - the kind of property that has real character but needs serious work to bring it up to the standard a family actually wants to live in.

We took on the full refurbishment and managed every element of the transformation:

The extension ran across the rear of the property, with Velux skylights flooding the new space with natural light - a deliberate choice to avoid the extension feeling dark or disconnected from the original cottage. The extension created an additional downstairs bathroom and extended the living room significantly, with double doors opening onto a new courtyard patio area. Even in a modest external footprint, the double doors and courtyard created an indoor-outdoor flow that makes the living space feel far larger than it is.

The landscaping was equally considered. A sandstone patio area at the front with new flower beds, carefully chosen trees and a rockery at the bottom of the garden. No artificial grass here - the brief called for something that felt natural and sympathetic to the character of a Bedfordshire stone cottage, and that's what we delivered.

The result is a property that looks and feels completely transformed - inside and out - while retaining everything that made it worth renovating in the first place.

Central Bedford - Back to Brick Full Renovation and Extension

The Central Bedford project was a different challenge entirely. A property in poor enough condition that the right approach was to strip it back to brick and start again. New electrics throughout, complete renovation from the inside out, and a rear extension that added a new toilet and a kitchen extension to genuinely change how the property functions day to day.

The garden was landscaped to complete the transformation - block paving and artificial grass creating a low maintenance outdoor space that works as hard as the interior renovation.

Back-to-brick renovations are not a job for every contractor. They require proper sequencing, coordination across multiple trades, and the experience to know what you're going to find when the walls come off. We've done enough of them to know how to manage the process properly - which means fewer surprises, a more accurate quote, and a better result.

    Why Bedfordshire Homeowners Choose Arcadia

The most common complaint we hear from new clients across Bedford and Bedfordshire is the same one we hear everywhere: unreliable contractors who quote low, disappear mid-project, and leave homeowners dealing with the consequences.

We started Arcadia because we'd experienced exactly that frustration ourselves as clients before we were contractors. That experience shapes everything about how we work. We show up when we say we will. We deliver when we promise. We keep you informed at every stage. And we build everything the way we'd build our own home.

The Turvey project is a good example of what that looks like in practice - a complex, multi-trade job on a period property, delivered properly from start to finish.

What We Do Across Bedford and Bedfordshire

Beyond the two projects above, we deliver the full range of building and landscaping services across Bedford and the surrounding villages:

Porcelain and block paving driveway installation. Natural stone and porcelain patio installation. Artificial grass for family gardens and rental properties - we've completed installations across Bedford and Turvey specifically. Bespoke garden rooms and home offices built to full residential standards. House extensions - single storey rear, side, and wraparound. Kitchen and bathroom renovations. Full home refurbishments. Timber fencing and boundary installations. Outdoor living structures including pergolas and seating areas.

Bedford's Clay Soil - Worth Knowing

Bedford sits on clay-heavy ground that drains poorly. Natural lawns can become waterlogged and unusable through autumn and winter regardless of maintenance effort. It's one of the reasons artificial grass is particularly well suited to Bedford gardens - a properly installed artificial lawn with correct drainage eliminates the waterlogging problem permanently.

It also affects groundwork on driveways and patios. Clay movement is one of the primary causes of surface lifting and cracking across the region. We account for this in sub-base depth and preparation on every job.
