Artificial Grass Installation in Cambridgeshire & Bedfordshire: The Honest Guide
Artificial grass is one of those topics that divides opinion. Some people love the idea. Others aren't convinced. Having recently completed installations across Fletton in Peterborough, Turvey in Bedfordshire, and Bedford - three very different gardens with three very different briefs - here's our genuinely honest take on when artificial grass is the right choice, when it isn't, and what separates a quality installation from a poor one.
Three Real Projects, Three Different Stories
Fletton, Peterborough - The Landlord Transformation
The Fletton job was a full garden transformation for a terraced rental property. The garden was tired, overgrown, and costing the landlord time and money to maintain between tenancies. The brief was simple: create something that looks great in listing photos, requires zero ongoing maintenance, and survives heavy use from tenants year after year.

We removed the old hedge line, installed a clean timber fencing boundary to reclaim and define the space, laid a block paved patio for outdoor dining, created multiple seating zones, and installed a professional-grade artificial lawn throughout.

The result is a garden that photographs well, attracts better tenants, and costs the landlord nothing in ongoing upkeep. For rental properties, artificial grass is one of the smartest investments a landlord can make.
Turvey, Bedfordshire - The Family Garden
The Turvey project was a different brief entirely. A family home with a garden that had become a dry, muddy, unusable space - the kind that looks fine in spring but deteriorates quickly under foot traffic from children and pets through summer.

Natural grass in this situation is a losing battle. You seed it, feed it, repair it, and within a season it's back to mud. The homeowner wanted a garden the whole family could actually use - something that stayed green, stayed clean, and didn't require a weekend of maintenance to keep looking presentable.

The transformation was significant. A dry, patchy mud area became a lush, usable lawn that looks the same in November as it does in July. For family gardens with heavy use, artificial grass solves a problem that natural turf simply can't.
Bedford - The Jungle Job
The Bedford project is the one that sticks in the memory. A rental property where the garden had been left completely unmanaged - weeds almost head height by the time we arrived. Getting to the surface underneath required serious clearance work before any installation could begin.

Once cleared, the transformation was dramatic. A completely unusable, overgrown space became a clean, low maintenance garden that the landlord can confidently hand over to tenants without worrying about what state it'll be in six months later.

If you've ever inherited or purchased a property with a garden in this kind of condition, artificial grass is often the most practical long-term solution - particularly for rental properties where you can't rely on tenants to maintain a natural lawn.
Is Artificial Grass Right for You?
Based on the projects we complete across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, artificial grass tends to work best in the following situations:
Rental properties where low maintenance and durability are the priority. Family gardens with heavy foot traffic from children and pets where natural grass struggles to survive. Gardens with poor soil, drainage issues, or areas that simply won't sustain natural grass regardless of how much effort goes in. Homeowners who want a pristine lawn year-round without the time commitment of maintaining one.
It's less suited to homeowners who genuinely love gardening and the natural feel of real grass, or properties where planning or environmental considerations restrict its use.
The Honest Downsides
We'd rather tell you the truth than just sell you a job. Here's what the sales brochures don't always mention:
Artificial grass gets hot in direct summer sun. On a genuinely hot day it can become uncomfortable underfoot - worth considering if you have young children or pets who spend a lot of time on it during heatwaves.
It requires maintenance - just less of it. Occasional brushing keeps the pile upright. Leaves and debris need clearing regularly. Moss and algae can develop on the surface over time if it isn't cleaned periodically. Low maintenance is not the same as no maintenance.
There is an environmental debate worth acknowledging. Artificial grass doesn't support pollinators the way natural grass does, and there are legitimate questions around microplastic shedding and urban heat. We're not dismissive of these concerns - they're real. For some clients and some gardens, natural grass with proper maintenance is still the right answer. We'll always tell you honestly which we think suits your situation.
What Separates a Quality Installation From a Poor One
This is where most artificial grass jobs go wrong, and it's almost always invisible once the job is finished.
The grass itself is only as good as what sits underneath it. A poorly prepared sub-base leads to uneven, soft, spongy artificial grass that looks cheap, drains badly, and starts lifting at the edges within a year or two. We see remedial work constantly across the region on jobs done cheaply by installers who cut corners on groundwork.
Our process on every artificial grass installation:
- Full excavation and removal of existing surface material - in the case of the Bedford job, significant clearance work before excavation could even begin
- Compacted MOT Type 1 or sharp sand sub-base installed to the correct depth
- A quality weed membrane laid before any grass goes down
- Proper drainage layer ensuring water drains freely rather than pooling underneath
- Professional-grade artificial turf only - we don't install budget turf
The difference in appearance, feel and longevity between professional and budget grade grass is significant and immediately visible. Edges are secured properly, joins are invisible, and the finish looks like a lawn rather than a carpet.
Artificial Grass and Planning Permission
For most rear gardens, artificial grass installation falls under permitted development and requires no planning permission. Front gardens are slightly more complex - since 2008, any surfacing over 5m² must be permeable or include drainage directed away from public drains. We factor this in on every front garden installation and advise you at consultation stage.
Conservation areas and listed buildings may have additional restrictions. If your property falls into either category we'll check before any work begins.
How Much Does Artificial Grass Installation Cost in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire?
Cost varies based on the size of the area, what needs to be cleared or excavated beforehand, sub-base requirements, and the grade of grass specified. The Bedford clearance job required significantly more preparation work than a straightforward installation - which is reflected in the quote.
Anyone giving you a fixed price per square metre over the phone without seeing the garden is guessing. We always assess on site before quoting - it's the only way to give you an accurate figure and avoid unpleasant surprises once work begins.
